Don't be a robot; express yourself here.
All right, here's how it goes:
Each week, I'll put in a blog post posing a question or referencing some of the reading we've done. Each student responds at least once to the post, answering the question, responding to it, riffing off it, et cetera. Pretty simple.
To set you up on the blog, I will need the email address that you wish to use. If you have a Blogger account, you can use that, or create a new one if you like. Your reply to the blog can be done as a comment to the original post. If you create a new post, please put your name and the date of the post in the title, so I may be able to track these better.
Remember, each week you're responsible for 300 words on the topic at hand. Don't stretch, or try to fill -- if you give the topic proper thought, one page should not be a problem at all.
You will also see other posts and the occasional Powerpoint or video up here to give you something to think about/read/understand/see, etc.
GROUND RULES FOR POSTING:
-- No flames. The most annoying thing in the world can be "Pajama People".
-- No personal attacks. That would be BAD.
-- I don't need to reiterate that hate language won't be tolerated, but I will.
-- When making an argument, be respectful and state your position. Since this class is about learning how to make an argument, NOT how to argue, I expect civility and respect for posters at all times. Marquess of Queensberry rules, please.
-- This is an academic forum. Remember that your words are visible to other people in the world. Be yourself, keep more or less on topic, and do not be afraid to speak your mind.
-- Finally (and this may seem contrary to the above rules sometimes), feel free to state your position if I ask for it. We're going to speak about some topics that may not make everyone comfortable -- I understand that. Part of participating is learning to move a little bit outside your comfort zone. Don't be afraid. Or, be afraid, and do it anyway. Courage is nothing more than holding off fear for one more moment.
That finished...welcome to the class, everyone.

Taylor Boveington September 1st 2010
ReplyDeleteMy name is Taylor Boveington and I just turned 20 in August. I went to Stow high school, which is not too far from here. I lived in the dorms my freshman year, then moved to White Hall Terrace apartments, and now I am living in the University Town homes. I am majoring in Marketing right now with a minor in International business. I started Kent State as a fashion major and then changed my mind after taking a marketing course. I have an older sister who went to Kent State and an older brother who just graduated from Baldwin Wallace College last spring. I was a cheerleader for about 13 years of my life. I was the vice president of my DECA class my junior and senior year of high school. I love planning events and interacting with other people. I love shows like Project Runway, Jersey Shore, and Greys Anatomy. I am not huge on reading. I enjoy magazines and will read occasionally, but other than the twilight and gossip girl series I am not much of a reader. I have an obsession with shopping. Even though I changed my major from Fashion to Business I hope to one day have a job using both. I am a junior right now and hope to be graduating in 4 years. I am not sure exactly where I want to be after I graduate. Some part of me wants to move to Arizona or Florida because I love warm weather, but a huge part of me wants to be near my family, here in Ohio. Maybe Columbus is where I will end up. I hope this writing class will teach me a lot more about writing. I am not that great of a writer. I am excited to see what our first paper is over, but extremely nervous at the same time.
Hi. My name is Lauren Spector and I’m a junior here at Kent State University. I’m majoring in education with a minor in hospitality management. I’m a huge baseball/Cleveland Indians fan and love to go horseback riding. Over spring break last year, I went white water rafting in West Virginia with a few friends and we camped out in a cabin in the middle of the woods. It was the biggest and best adventure of my life. I have a little brother who is in second grade and will be eight in December. I have two cats and a dog. I am an active member of Sigma, Sigma, Sigma (or Tri-Sigma for short) here at Kent. I am on the fundraising committee for the sorority because I love to plan events and help others. I’m from Parma, OH and went to Normandy High School. In high school, I was involved in Teens for Teens and DECA in my business class. In Teens for Teens, I went to elementary schools and taught kids about not using tobacco; it was a four week course.
ReplyDeleteWhen I have spare time, I like to watch movies and television and hang out with friends. My favorite television shows are The Amazing Race, One Tree Hill, Supernatural, Project Runway, and Brothers and Sisters. I also love to read. I love Jodi Picoult and the Twilight Saga. Sometimes I’ll read random books without knowing the author, but if I think it sounds good, then I read it. My goal in life is to travel around the world. I traveled a lot within the United States but the only other country I have been to is Canada. I want to get off the North American continent. I don’t really know what I want to do with my life. Right now, with my major in education, I’m hoping to be a high school English teacher. I have a minor in HM because I love planning events and think event planning is a fun career. As much as I don’t like Ohio, I want to stay because this is where my family is. I’m excited for college writing II and hope it will make me a better writer.
Ryan McDaniel September 1st 2010
ReplyDeleteMy name is Ryan McDaniel, I am technically a sophomore here but have been in college for three years so I consider myself a junior. The reason I am a little behind is because before attending Kent State I was enrolled at Cleveland State for one year. The counselor there told me she was going to put me on a five year program because it would be easier. On top of that not a lot of my credits transferred because apparently the classes they offer at Cleveland State are very specific to the requirements of their degrees only and don’t seem to stack up to the standards of other universities. I am a nursing major right now and will be beginning clinical very soon. When I graduate from college I hope to be a flight nurse working in major trauma on a helicopter. I have also considered becoming a nurse practitioner. A nurse practitioner is sort of like a doctor. You are able to make medical diagnoses, be the primary care provider for patients, and write prescriptions for medications. When not studying vigorously I spend most of my free time playing Xbox or watching movies. I am a bit of a movie geek, but who isn’t. I graduated from North Olmsted High School which is about an hour away. In high school I ran cross country for three years but haven’t been running lately. I would like to again soon but I am currently recovering from a very minor surgery so any over exertion of the sort is out for about two weeks. Personally I have never been much of a reader other than the fact that I buy books because I like the idea of being a reader and then they just sit on my bookshelf for months at a time. This class makes me pretty nervous because I don’t consider myself a great writer but what I want to take away is a little bit of confidence when it comes to writing.
Samantha LiVigni is my name. I’m twenty years old, but I’ll be twenty-one in a little under two weeks. I find this unfortunate, considering I don’t want to get any older. I don’t want to “celebrate” any more birthdays. I’d prefer to ignore them for the rest of my life. Anyway… I’m a Fashion Design major here at Kent State. I’m in my third year and looking forward to getting out of here soon! I feel like I’m always drawing or sewing something, and if I’m not drawing or sewing I’m thinking about drawing or sewing and how my next project is going to turn out. I tend to get rather stressed out because of my major, but who doesn’t, right? I wish I could relax when it comes to schoolwork, but I’m stuck being a perfectionist when it comes to my art. It is something I love though, so I guess it’s good that I think about it so much.
ReplyDeleteBefore Kent, I was attending high school in Uniontown, Ohio. It’s a farm area and not very exciting at all unless you love cows and corn mazes. No mall. No movie theater. I think the most exciting place in the area is a YMCA… Before my family moved to “farm country” we lived in Akron, Ohio, which is also where I was born. Growing up I loved drawing and reading and making up stories (sometimes with my siblings). My family includes my mom and dad, two sisters, a brother and a crazy dog that will attack anything that moves.
Anyway. I really enjoy writing, even if I’m not great at it. I just like to write for fun. So, hopefully this College Writing II class will mold me into a better writer. I’m looking forward to learning a lot in this class.
Hey everyone, my name is Vince Scarpelli. I am one of the few sophomores in this College Writing II class. Like I said in class, my major is Air Traffic Control. I’m 19 years old and have lived in Northeast Ohio ever since I was two. I was born in Michigan ironically, but don’t worry, I’m a diehard Buckeyes fan. I have two younger sisters as well as my parents at home in Elyria, Ohio, where I attended Elyria Catholic High School. Sports are probably the biggest part of my life. I started playing them as early as 4 years old. I played soccer from ages 4 until 14. I started out with tee ball as a little kid then moved to baseball until I was a sophomore in high school where we won the city championship. I also played basketball from 5th grade until my sophomore year as well. My first year of football was when I was in 5th grade, which I played all the way through my senior year of high school. Football is by far my favorite sport. I play fantasy football, watch College and the NFL on television, and play Madden on XBOX. I like to go to the rec center with my friends and play pick-up basketball games while at school. Music is also a big part of my life. I am absolutely musically challenged and couldn’t play a note on any instrument to save my life, but like everyone else whether it’s in the car on the way to work or lounging, I find myself listening to it everyday. Other than that I’m a pretty calm person who likes to lounge around playing video games and cornhole with friends when we got some time. I plan to graduate in 4 years, and so far I’m still on pace!
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Maggie Schupp. I am twenty years old and I am from Seven Hills, Ohio. I graduated from Normandy High School where I was a cheerleader and gymnast, and was also a part of DECA. I am now a junior here at Kent State and will hopefully be graduating sometime next year. My freshman year I was a Early Childhood Education major, last year I then changed it to Public Relations, and I am now currently an Advertising Major. This past summer I traveled to London and Paris for a three credit summer class. We studied the differences in media and advertising. After that trip I decided that after graduation I want to move to London and work at the Advertising Standards Authority. My family is a big part of my life. I have one older sister, we are total opposites but have become best friends. I am Italian which results in me having a large, loud family including fifteen first cousins. I enjoy eating all Italian foods except for spaghetti. I currently work at Don Joseph Toyota dealership on Main Street in Kent. It is the best job I have ever had, and hopefully I will soon be buying a new car that is much needed. I live with four of my best friends, and couldn’t ask for anyone better to live with. I am possibly the worst cook, if it weren’t for them I would be eating cereal every day of my life. Shopping is what I do when I am in a bad mood which has resulted in me having way too many clothes and not a big enough closet to fit them all in.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy writing a lot, but I am not very good at it. I hope that this class helps improve my writing and my confidence in being able to write.

ReplyDeleteMy name is James Piscura. I’m in my third year here at Kent where I’m majoring in Middle Childhood Education with concentrations in English and Social Studies. I plan on staying around Kent long enough to get my Master’s Degree, then hopefully I’ll get a job here in Northeast Ohio. However, the state of the economy coupled with low demand for the two subjects I’m pursuing will probably complicate the whole situation. I’m excited to get into a classroom with middle school kids, despite the stereotypes that they’re hard to handle.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Solon, Ohio, and where I spent the first 18 years of my life in the same house. I have no siblings besides a poodle dog my mom has been treating like an infant child for the past ten years. In all honesty, I love my dog, Boomer, but ten years of “cutsie-cutsie” baby voices echoing through the house has had a huge effect on my development as a person. My freshman year at Kent, I lived in Koonce. I made the mistake of moving to the overpriced Centennial A my sophomore year. I currently live in a much cheaper house down the street from Taco Tanto’s on West Williams Street. It’s my first house, and it’s been quite an experience settling in during the past month. The house is run down and still needs a lot of work, but the yet unnamed house continues to be an easy place to live.
Apart from school activities, I’m very active in the Cleveland music scene. I’m in a band that’s based out of downtown Cleveland. This summer, we went on tour the hottest week of the year in a small van that, unfortunately for us, did not have air conditioning. It was a great time, loaded with memory-making moments, thanks to run-ins with some completely unforgettable characters. We have a record out on vinyl via Smog Veil Records and another one we’re about to begin mixing and mastering. Every weekend I make the long drive out to Cleveland to play a show or practice. Not to be cliché, but music is a huge part of my life. If I’m not playing guitar on the porch, I’m usually inside listening to records or playing music with my friends.
I really enjoy writing, but I realize, like most people, I probably have some bad habits that need to be addressed. I look forward to coming out of this class a more self-assured writer.
My name is Joshua Sayre and I am a sophomore here at Kent State University. I am twenty years old and turn twenty one in October. I am a pre-business major but will soon be into business management. I got a 4.0 my first semester last year but now I have a 3.5 cumulative which will hopefully go up fast. The reason I chose business as my major because I didn’t get into the architecture program at first which and I wanted to do physics but hated chemistry. My real passion might be history but I do not want to become a teacher. I am currently taking Deutsch and it is my favorite class but I am not very good at English grammar so it is a little harder for me. I hope this class will also help with grammar so I can do better in German. I am extremely competitive and I play on the dodge ball club team here at KSU, we travel everywhere and I recommend it to everyone. Winter is my favorite season because I can’t breathe well in the heat and I love to snowboard. In my spare time I love to listen to music, play sports, sax, guitar and talk to people. On Tuesday someone said they like to Bowl and they had an average of something like 226, well my average is only a 202 but on my eighteenth birthday I got a new Storm bowling ball and it smells like orange ginger, I love it. I am a mentor for the Excel living community, a member of the Kent chapter of NSCS and look forward to attempting to join the student ambassadors program. This past summer I obtained my first full time job and got the best start to a resume I could ask for. My official title was JPMorgan Chase & Company Corporate Real Estate Lease Administration Summer Intern. I hated it, I sorted leases all day in a basement and communication was so bad from the upper levels that my co-workers and I had to re-do most everything we did already in a different order. I guess I better stop here for now but I would love to tell people more about me another time.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Shaila Cullum and I am a junior accounting major here at Kent State. I transferred from Otterbein College after my freshman year. I am from Ashtabula, Ohio and I graduated from Lakeside High School. I am currently living on campus in Engleman Hall with hopes that my parents will finally let me get an apartment off campus next year. I plan on continuing my studies here until I get my masters, which will hopefully be in another two years. As an accountant I would like to work at a smaller accounting firm because I feel if I worked at one of the “big four” I would be stuck in my own little cubicle world. I work part time at Sheetz in Streetsboro, Ohio and sometimes I feel like I am just having fun rather than working. I also worked at a Wal-Mart over the summer but recently quit because I felt I could not handle 21 credit hours and two jobs. I am pretty outgoing when I have the time to just hang out. You will mostly find me with my closest friends, but I am always willing to meet new people. I do not enjoy writing that much, which is why I am lucky my best friend is a magazine journalism major. I enjoy working with numbers and I have always excelled in mathematics. I just started taking elementary Japanese this semester and I think it is something I actually enjoy learning. I am 1/4 Japanese and I enjoy learning about the Japanese culture as well as sharing what I know about it with my friends. I would like to open a bakery or restaurant one day because my true passion is baking, and I enjoy learning how to cook from my Uncle who used to be a sushi chef. I hope to further my writing skills this semester because I do not feel like I write adequately for the level I should be at. I hope to get to know some classmates and have fun while learning.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Nicole Aikens. I have lived in Cuyahoga Falls for my entire 20 years of existence, and I graduated from Woodridge High School. I am a magazine journalism major, but I wouldn’t mind if I ended up editing instead of writing in the long run. This is my third year at Kent State, so even though my academic profile says I am a sophomore, we’re going to call me a junior, and then we’ll call it a day. Deal?
ReplyDeleteWhen the School of Journalism isn’t eating up all my free time, I like to help my dad coach basketball. I was a four-year varsity letter winner in high school, and I tied for the record of most three-pointers in a single game for girls at my school. Last year we coached the 7th graders at Kimpton Middle School, and this year my dad will be the junior varsity coach at Stow High School, so I will be helping there.
You might (not) recognize my name from the Daily Kent Stater. I wrote for the Stater for two years, starting as a first semester freshman. That was daunting, but now they are trusting (and paying) me to fix other writers’ mistakes. Also daunting, but pretty damn cool.
Needless to say, I love writing. I love proper usage and punctuation. The best day of my summer was when my new AP Stylebook—a journalist’s bible—came in the mail. OK, I’m exaggerating a little bit there, but I seriously do love it. One day being a master of words is going to be my profession, so I have to love it.
But that also means that I have to be one of the best, so I am hoping that this class will allow me to practice the skills I’ve already acquired and possibly teach me a few new skills along the way.
My name is Brad Perkins and I am a sophomore here at Kent State. I currently just changed majors from Nursing to Secondary Education. Academically my strong traits in school are sciences so I plan on getting teaching some kind of science in the future. I was born and raised in the city of Maumee which is just 30 minutes south of Toledo, Ohio. I came to Kent State mostly to get away from home, receive a degree, and get the college experiment. Although Kent State is a nice school, I plan on moving far away from Ohio once graduating from this University. With little scholarships awarded academically, I joined the Army ROTC program here at Kent State and joined the Ohio National Guard. Together they both pay for my school and then some. Fort Knox Kentucky was actually where I spent 11 weeks of my summer participating in basic training. Little sleep and food were the two worst parts of basic training but it was well worth the hard work to have my school paid off, instead of taking out a loan. I plan on making a career out of the Army spending at least 20 years active duty. Once retired from the Army is when I plan on hopefully teaching high school science and maybe coach football which is also a passion of mine as well. I enrolled in this class to advance my writing a come one step closer to earning my degree.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Eric Randazzo and I am a sophomore this year at Kent State. I am a managerial marketing major and I plan on going after a minor in sports management. I commute to school every day as I only live 10 to 15 minutes away. I live in Stow, Ohio and graduated from Stow-Munroe Falls high school class of 2009. While in high school I bowled for the bulldogs from my sophomore year all the way until I graduated. My senior year I was captain of the team and took our team to place 8th in the district. Even though the team didn’t make it to the state tournament, I moved on as an individual and placed 16th in the state, but wasn’t satisfied. Bowling is part of my life and I have surrounded myself with it. I work at Sto-Kent Family Entertainment which is a bowling center and I also work at Ace Mitchells Bowlers Mart, which is a bowling warehouse. I have worked at Sto-Kent for 3 years and I have only worked at Ace Mitchell’s for about a month. I also bowl 3 nights a week, all along with going to school full time and working every day, so I would say my life is pretty busy. I am also a huge fan of football especially the pros. I was originally born in Jamestown, New York so I am a huge fan of the Buffalo Bills but I have also become an even bigger fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Carolina Panthers. There is really no reason behind being a fan of these two random teams, but I can’t help it. One thing that may come as a surprise is that while most football fans are excited to watch all the games of their team, I cannot wait for the offseason to start because I love watching the NFL draft. I make a whole weekend of watching pick after pick because drafting players to these teams is what my dream job is. What I mean is that I would love to be a general manager of an NFL team just so I can work with players and help out an organization my selecting players to help out and win. But what I see myself doing, in all reality, is running my own bowling center or being a general manager of one so I can stay around the sport of bowling.
ReplyDeleteHello all, Alicia Busher is my name. I am a junior at Kent State and I am 20 years old, turning 21 in a month. I'm rather pumped to finally be of age, even if it means I'll have to find something else to excitedly look forward to for awhile. Moving on, I was born and raised in the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. I am one of four, the oldest girl out of three younger brothers. My brothers are all way over 6 feet which has always made me still feel like the youngest.
ReplyDeleteWhen I originally came here I majored in Interior Design but then decided to switch to Journalism and Mass Communications school after my first year. I now am concentrating on majoring in Advertising and Marketing and I love it. I hope to get a summer internship at one of my favorite Cleveland ad agencies, Brokaw.
This year at Kent I joined the Student Success Leader program, which involves me teaching a class for a semester to incoming freshmen. So far I love it. It's not something I would have ever seen myself doing before, but it feels really great to be involved and to help out new freshmeat anyway I can. So far, I feel as if I will learn a lot from this class and I am looking forward to hopefully getting to know some classmates while fine tuning my writing skills.
My name is Britney Meteney and I am currently a Junior. I am 20 years old and will soon be turning 21 in December. I am from Darlington, Pennsylvania which is about an hour and fifteen minutes from Kent. It is a really small town and my neighbors are cows, horses, and donkeys. I hate it. I went to Blackhawk High School and was a cheerleader. Now I am studying Fashion Merchandise. When first coming to Kent I was Fashion Design but realized for what I wanted to do after college was more Fashion Merchandise. Also, Fashion Design kicked my butt. There was so much work and projects always due. My first year I don't think I ever really got a full nights sleep from all the work. Since I switched, I am a little behind in my fashion classes. I chose Fashion because clothes make me happy. Any time something goes wrong in my life I shopping. Its like my therapy, sadly. Also, in high school my friends would always take me shopping and make me pick out clothes for them and my sister doesn't buy any clothes with out my approval. After I graduate I would love to work for a Fashion Magazine. Marie Claire to be exact and I would love to be some sort of stylist for the magazine. So yes, New York City is where I hope to end up. But, for now I am stuck here. And just trying to get through college and this class because my worst subject has always been english.
ReplyDeleteTo whom it may concern,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Daniel J. Probola and I was born in a little suburb called Chalfant ten minutes outside the city of Pittsburgh. I am more than proud to be from the 'Steel City'. At times, I have a hard time understanding why an American football rivalry can cause such a ruckus between my beloved city and hostile Cleveland fans but I digress.
I chose to come to Kent State for many various reasons. On my first voyage out west to peruse this campus I immediately fell in love. The size of the student body and campus were big enough to make me imagine unlimited possibilities while the quaintness of the surrounding areas provided a tranquil small town feel.
I decided to major in Advertising and minor in Marketing for two acceptable reasons: Advertisements will always be around, whether or not we like them, and since my major and minor are so closely related it only takes one extra class to earn the marketing minor.
My family is the motivating force behind everything that I do. Raising five sons and a slightly immature husband while obtaining a Master's degree is why my mother is one of the biggest inspirations for me to succeed. My oldest brother is now 30 with a successful career in the culinary arts, caring wife and two of the world’s most beautiful children. He, along with all my brothers, makes me very proud. My niece and nephew, ages two and four, are growing up right before my eyes and I am trying my best to set a good example for them here in Kent via higher education.
I have a low confidence in my writing abilities and have trouble reading in my spare time. I would like to change both of those immediately. I am ecstatic to see how I can evolve as a writer and a student as this class progresses.
My name is Theodore J. Bertsch, but I commonly go by TJ. I was born in November 1989 and raised in Sandusky Ohio. I have an older sister who is 4 years older than myself and a brother who is 12 years older. Most people either do not know where Sandusky Ohio is until I mention that Cedar Point happens to be just behind where I live (across the water at least). I played about 12 years of classical concert piano, and swam competitively for most of my life. In 2005 I was at a swim camp in Michigan where Michael Phelps happened to be training at the same time as we were being coached by his own coach. I stopped swimming in high school because I never liked to swim competitively althought I do love to swim on my own. I plaed tennis at school too for a few years and still play occasionaly. My freshman year at Kent State I joined a martial arts club and later became the student manager. I have entirely too much fun with it. My sophomore year I joined AFROTC and changed my major to Russian from French Translation and German. I have taken French all though high school as well as 2 years of spanish. I even got one of my english teachers to teach me some basic latin and ancient greek just for fun. I plan on taking at least a couple semesters of Chinese eventually. It is interesting to me that I have never done well in English classes before. Going into high school I was told not to sign up for a foreign language because my english grades were on the low side. I signed up regardless and since then my understanding of English has increased. In my eighth grade year I almost had no idea what an infinitive was, so clearly I hated English. I am also terrible at anything with math so foreign languages is really the only thing I have going for me that might present a good future. Other than that I am a normal college kid, probably more relaxed but into skydiving, scuba diving, skiing, and of course martial arts.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Jessica Denton, but I prefer to be called Jesse. I'm a 20 years young, and a junior majoring in Photo Illustration. My first year of school I commuted to Kent Stark and last year I lived in Lake on campus. This year I'm commuting from home, which is proving to be a quite a challenge since it's 45 minutes one way (and that's if I don't get stuck behind a tractor or a trailer, which is frequent this time of year). I was born in Navarre, Ohio which is where the Nickles bread factory is and the whole town really does smell like doughnuts. I moved to Louisville when I was two and my younger brother Roman was born not too long after that. I was pretty shy in school, never really being a part of the in-crowd, which was okay with me. I preferred to be at home or outside reading or writing. I received a camera for Christmas when I was seven and I spent most of my time taking pictures of our flowers, and of my brother and the children my mom baby-sat. Once I got into junior high I was in an angsty punk-rock phase and refused to do much of anything. Towards the end of high school I started to balance out and began taking photos and entering them in contests. I won Best of Show at the Stark County Fair a few years ago and I was really proud of it. When it came to college however, I had no idea what I wanted to do, I wasn't really sure I even wanted to go to college at all. My parents suggested that I go into Writing or Photography since those were two of my passions and I applied to K-Stark right before the cut-off date. I graduated in May of 2008 and received my acceptance letter the same week. Since I've gotten here to Kent I've joined the May 4th Task Force and I've become secretary. I'm very proud of the ceremony we put on last year and it was worth the hard work and lack of sleep. I'm trying my best to branch out and get involved in more activities and to apply for scholarships for next year. I've already been told that I'm a good writer by many teachers and students, so I'm hoping to work out the kinks in my writing and be able to write solid research papers from here on out.
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Kyle Casper. I’m twenty years young and enjoying life. Originally I am from Medina, Ohio born and raised. Lived in the same house for a little over 18 years, but I have been living on my own for about 2 years in an apartment with one of my good friends from High School. There’s not much to say about my hometown. I find it quite boring and I was so excited to finally move out and be on my own. I like living in Kent because I’m far away enough from home, but still close enough to my family. I’m a Junior here at Kent State University. My oldest brother graduated on the Presidents List from KSU with a major in Political Science. My other older brother went to KSU for his freshman year then transferred to Akron and is currently studying there. My younger sister is still in High School back home in medina. Currently I’m enrolled in the 2+2 Computer Technology Major offered at KSU. I originally came in as a freshman wanting to major in Computer Animation and Design, but I quickly changed my mind and decided that major wasn’t for me. I feel like the current program I am in now suits me very well. Working with computers has always been a hobby of mine ever since I was about 10 years old. I love technology and how it is always changing to become better. There is just something about computers and new tech gadgets that spark my interest and keep me wanting more. My girlfriend and my crotch rocket are the only two things that seem to make me happy and can completely clear my mind. I played sports throughout High School such as football, baseball, and wrestling and I love watching college sports and professional sports on tv. Another one of my all time favorite shows that always gets me laughing is Fantasy Factory. I’m not a huge fan of reading or writing, but I believe I am a decent writer. I hope this class will help further strengthen my skills to help me with the rest of my college career. This class seems like it will be fun and I’m looking forward to this semester.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Nicole Fazio i am currently a Junior, about to be 21 years old in November. I am majoring in nursing and i hope to have that degree within the next two years. I was born in Ohio and have lived here all of my life, mostly in Solon with my family. I am the oldest of five kids which seems to surprise a lot of people, considering families these days aren't that big. Ages range from 20 to 13 so there is quite and age difference, which always makes things interesting around my house. I worked 40 hours a week all summer and at times worked two jobs, so basically i am a workaholic. I love anything medical, which is why i want to become a nurse so badly, my mother is a nurse and that is where a majority of my inspiration comes from. And the simple fact of wanting to help people is also a huge part of what i want to pursue in my career. I am thinking about possibly continuing my education after nursing to become a doctor, but the thought of six plus years of school is a downfall. I love to work out and swim which i did mostly all summer when i wasn't working. I also love music, any kind of music except for really hard core metal i will listen to, and really enjoy analyzing the lyrics of songs, but i can't write music, thats a talent that i wish i could have. My favorite shows are Greys Anatomy, Jersey Shore, any TLC show and the Food Network. I can not cook very well, but being Italian I know how to cook some really good pasta. Something interesting about me is that I am anaphylactic to all dairy products, which is different from lactose and tolerance, my allergy is life threatening, but I’ve only had three episodes where I have ended up in the hospital. I have to constantly watch labels of food, but it is kind of a good thing because it forces me to have a very healthy diet.
ReplyDeleteI am currently a nursing student here at Kent State University. This is my third year in college and I spend most of my time doing homework, studying, or napping. As a nursing major there isn't much time for partying and missing assignments are never an option to me. Though I do pretty well in my major, I have to admit that writing is something I am not very good at. In my major APA writing style is required for all assignments, so MLA can be a foreign territory for me. I enjoy expressing my opinions and view points when appropriate, but I also enjoy hearing view points from others. Though I enjoy expressing my thoughts; this happens to be the first blog I've ever written. I would like to believe that I'm a very understanding and caring person. I live in Kent with my roomate and my overweight orange cat named Oliver. I currently am unempolyed due to the work involved in excelling in my major. I like to go running when I feel a little stressed and the only books I read seem to be textbooks. I listen to a wide variety of music including just about every genre. When I was in highschool I was really involved in music and it has always been a passion of mine. My parents and brother live in Cleveland; which is were I happen to be from before moving to Kent. They are very proud of me and supportive. I see myself in the future finishing my nursing degree and possibly becoming a nurse midwife. When I graduate I hope to move out of state and travel. I always appreciate the small things in life and take absolutely nothing for granted. I try to turn every experience I have into an opportunity to learn and grow. I realize that I have a lot to learn when it comes to expressing my ideas on paper, but I'm sure that will change after this semester is over.
ReplyDeleteI guess I am running a little late with this blog thing, I thought we did not have to write on this just to be safe.
ReplyDeleteHi, I am Jessica Czerr. I am a 23 year old Sophomore and am unsure what I want to major in once again. Five months ago, I found out that I was pregnant and that put a damper on my goals to being a traveling reporter. I'm excited to be a mother and recently found out that I am having a little girl.
A lot of people would not know this about me by looking, but I am also a combat medic in the Army. I have been to Iraq for a year. My contract with the military ends in 2011. At that time, my focus will be on my child, so I do not plan to re-enlist.
Privacy is a luxury that most people currently seem to take for granted. That is, privacy in general terms that hasn’t already been slowly taken away from us without the general public’s knowledge or concern. With both of these articles, my first reaction is that both the technologies are just natural evolutions and progressions to the technology and set boundaries that already exists in our society today. GPS, wiretapping, and microchips are some of the ways our government has already conned us into believing that we are, on an individual level, “safer”. However, the majority of these technologies exist purely on the notion of ‘what if’? Society has scared us into believing that if or when worst comes to worst, this technology will always be on our side.
ReplyDeleteMy first gut reactions after reading these two articles were mixed emotions of fear and disbelief. The first article seems against standard protocol on an educational level, but I suppose it is a way to involve students on a personal level, which brings a deeper meaning to the knowledge process in general. I think that it should be voluntary if a student wants to be considered for DNA testing, and if the student chooses to do so, all records and information that is obtained should be deleted so that it never fall into the wrong hands.
As far as the second article goes, I thought it was very interesting. I’d always thought that as technology progresses, we would see more and more things like this in the future. However, I’d always picture them as more of a optional convenience to customers and the general public, versus their notion that red flags are raised if you choose to be excluded. As far as the security aspect, I actually think that it would be non-invasional to only scan individuals with previous crime records. I don’t think that it is fair to scan individuals that haven’t done anything in order for them to be tracked under a watchful eye. With the consumer route idea of using the scans to target advertisements to certain audiences, it not only sounds invasive but it sounds too good to be true in my personal opinion. In general I think that the price and time that it would take to track every individual is outstanding, even though I have no true concept. I try to tell myself that technology won’t ever evolve to where it is harmful to us as human beings but looking down the road it may be closer in sight than anybody can predict.
